Consumers Ready to Pay More for Korean Beef  (English: MF)
http://english.chosun.com/site/data/html_dir/2009/09/15/2009091500990.html
Summary: Korean consumers would pay four times more money to have Korean beef instead of U.S. beef, reflecting a growing preference for the home-grown article. The reason behind the soaring popularity of Korean beef is largely lingering fears over mad cow disease. Massive protests were sparked by exaggerated fears, and restaurants are now legally required to indicate the country of origin of beef being sold. The result was that many restaurants opted to use Korean beef on their menu.

Before the introduction of the law, only 46 percent of restaurants used Korean beef. Now that has risen to 75 percent. Of course, the figures may be exaggerated as mislabeling is rampant, but the number of restaurants using local beef has certainly increased.
But now the livestock industry is concerned about oversupply. In June, the number of beef cattle was about 260,000, but as the price of Korean beef rose, more and more people are expanding their business. By 2011, the industry predicts there will be a 13-percent rise in the number of beef cattle to 295,000. The country may soon need a strategy to bring the local livestock industry under control to prevent the price of Korean beef from plummeting.

Summary: Ottawa has taken its complaint against a Korean ban on Canadian beef to the World Trade Organization, a government official said Tuesday. Eight other countries have agreed to arbitrate on the WTO's Dispute Settlement Body. They are the U.S., the EU, Brazil, Argentina, China, India, Japan and Taiwan. The panel's decision is binding on WTO members.
There is speculation that the panel will favor Canada because the U.S., the EU, Brazil and Argentina are major beef exporters. If so, Korea will face pressure to resume imports of Canadian beef, which were stopped after an outbreak of mad cow disease in Canada in 2003. Japan and Taiwan applied to sit on the panel to gauge whether to open their own beef market, experts speculate.
