Grocery Retailers Focus on Private Brand Products [Korean, OSY]

Summary: Reflecting inflation pressure, local grocery retailers are strengthening private brand products.  GS Supermarkets reported that the share of private brand products in the total sales exceeded 20 percent for the first time in February 2011.  Lotte Mart reported that the share of private brand products in the total sales marked 24.1 percent in February 2011, up 1.7 percent point compared to the same period last year.

Coffee Imports Last Year Hit a Record High [Korean, OSY]

Summary: According to the customs office, imports of coffee amounted to a record high 117,000 tons ($420 million) last year.  While imports from South Asian countries, including Vietnam, declined by 0.8 percent, imports from South American countries, including Columbia, surged by 47 percent, which reflecting stronger demand for premium quality coffee among the local consumers.  Imports of espresso machine has also shown a sharp increase.  Total value of espresso machine imports was $32 million in 2010, four times larger than 2005.
